Opposition parties in BMC on Monday slammed the civic body over the issue of potholes. The BMC, however, claimed that the situation is under control, as compared to previous monsoon.

As on Monday evening, the BMC had received 6,278 pothole-related complaints. Of which, 4861 have been filled, as per the BMC.

"Every year, we have to face similar problems on the city's roads. The BMC has claimed that there are only 784 potholes, which is a mere eyewash. There have been cases of people meeting with accidents after hitting potholes on the roads maintained by the BMC. Given this pathetic condition, school bus owners' association has decided not to ply buses when roads are flooded. Who is responsible for this?" asked Devendra Amberkar, opposition leader in the BMC.

Amberkar drew support from corporators from the MNS, the NCP and SP.

Reacting to the issues raised by the members, additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas said the situation is way better than that compared to last year. "We took certain measures to address the craters' issue this year. We carried out preventive maintenance work by identifying bad patches in the summer. Also, we completed 248 project roads: 129, 102 and 17 in island city, western and eastern suburbs respectively. Besides, we have completed improvement of 47 minor roads," Srinivas claimed.
His explanation, however, did not go down well with the opposition, barring members of SP, who boycotted proceedings of the House.

According to BMC's potholes tracking system, www.voiceoficitizen.com, the corporation has received 6,278 potholes complaints, out of which 4861 have been cleared. Amongst the total potholes, 5794 grievances have been received by ward offices. Of these, 72 pits were found on roads maintained by non-BMC governing agencies like the MMRDA, PWD, MSRDC, railways, private layouts and others.
The corporation spent Rs59 crore on potholes maintenance last year
This year, the corporation has brought down the expenses to Rs28 crore
Meanwhile, the roads department has proposed to treat craters using potholes filling machines in island city, western and eastern suburbs at a cost of Rs3 crore.
