In a span of seven months, the State Forensic Science Laboratories (FSL) has received 327 cases of meat samples at their regional laboratories at Nagpur, Pune, and Kalina. Of which 20 per cent of the cases have been tested positive for beef. The Kalina FSL itself receives an average of 25 cases in a month for meat testing.

Moreover, 100 state policemen are now being trained to use a beef testing kit which will be used from September onwards. The Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories will begin beef testing in their regional centres of Nashik and Aurangabad by August while the other centres at Amravati, Nanded, and Kolhapur plan to begin beef testing by next year.

Out of the meat samples that were seized from different parts of Maharashtra and tested by the FSL, 65 cases were positive in nature. The FSL has formed a special team to test meat seized by the police.

"At times, it becomes difficult to identify if the meat seized is beef or not. This is because the meat is often mixed with buffalo meat. We have also received samples which are adulterated and cannot be called pure beef as it has contents of goat and buffalo meat too," said an FSL official.

Meanwhile, the FSL is training 100 policemen from the state to use meat testing kits which will be used to detect beef on the spot.

"We will be distributing the kit in the next two months after we complete training of our fourth batch of policemen from the state," said Dr KV Kulkarni, Director of Forensic Science Laboratory.

"The state government is positive about providing these kits by September. If the test is positive, it will act as evidence as well as curb the delay in detection of meat," said Kulkarni.

Analysis

After adequate training is provided by the FSL and undertaken by 100 policemen, the detection of meat will be a simple task and also save a lot of time of the government machinery.
Moreover, communal tension will reduce drastically as the spot test will help detect the meat in no time.
