One held by Railway police for sedating and looting train passengers; 2 on the run

The Railway police have arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly sedating express train passengers and then fleeing away with their valuables. The accused has been identified as Jagdish Shahu who hails from Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. The police are on the lookout for Shahu's absconding accomplices, identified as Deepak Soni (40) and Sahil Khan (35).

According to the railway police, the trio used target passengers travelling in the general compartments of express trains of the Konkan Railways. "They would look for single passengers and try to gain their confidence by chatting them up. They would then offer them cream biscuits, cold drinks and beverages assorted with sedative tablets which can put a person to deep sleep for more than three hours. After their victims fall asleep, they would loot them and get down at next station," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Western Railway, Purushottam Karad.

One such complaint was registered by Rajesh Mullaya (31) where he alleged that he fell asleep after eating cream biscuits offered to him by the accused. He woke up at a Bangaluru-based hospital and his valuables were missing.

Police-constable Lonkar of the crime branch unit 5, Vashi spotted Shahu at Andheri railway station following which he was arrested on January 15.

"Soni is a professional history-sheeter. He has similar cases registered against him at Bhopal and he has also served a jail sentence for the same. The trio has executed the crimes at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Kalyan, Panvel and other railway station. So far valuables worth Rs 70,000 including 2 gold rings, 1 LED television, 2 gold rings,1 stereo headset and cash Rs 5,000 has been recovered," Karad added.
