In the ICSE class X examinations this year, the top position was shared by three students, two of whom are from Mumbai.

Ananya Harshad Patwardhan, a student from Chaturbhuj Narsee Memorial School (CNMS), Mumbai; Tezan Tapan Sahu from St Mary's School, Navi Mumbai and Sougata Chowdhury from St Xavier's School, Kolkata, each scored 99.2%, breaking the record of the past five years.

Talking to dna, Ananya said: "I knew I would score good marks, but I didn't expect to top all India. I am addicted to reading different novels, and during the whole of last year, I only read the books that were prescribed for my academics. That was a huge sacrifice, because of which I achieved what I have today. Self study also helped me."

A trained singer, Ananya says singing is another hobby.

The second position was also bagged by three students scoring 99%, and the third place was shared by 11 students, securing 98.8%.

Talking to the media, Amrish Patel, president and trustee of CNMS, said: "All credit goes to Ananya's principal, teachers and parents. The number of students scoring above 90% in our school has increased this year. We are going to start ISC XII classrooms in the new academic year."

The pass percentage in the ICSE examination stood at 98.49%, which has been the best result in the last five years. The examinations are conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), results of which were declared Monday. Over 1.58 lakh candidates appeared for the exam this year.

Girls did marginally better with a pass percentage of 98.95%, as opposed to 98.12% in the case of boys. Last year too, the girls had fared better than boys.

Gerry Arathoon, chief executive officer of CISCE, said: "The toppers in both class X and class XII have broken the record of the last five years with the percentage secured this year."

In terms of region-wise performance, Southern region recorded the highest pass percentage 99.66%. Maharashtra comes in southern region.
