A small social project launched to make citizens aware of India's legendary leaders has inspired a law centre to emulate it across the seven seas.
Impressed by a trend of households displaying a name plate about an inspiring Indian figure, a New York-based post-graduate law centre wants to replicate the initiative of a Pune-based Ganesh Mandal.
It was during a social project for rehabilitation of criminals and prevention of crime in slums undertaken by the Adarsh Mitra Mandal in Pune that it came in contact with Symbiosis Law school. The school's professor Santosh Aghav contacted the mandal's founder, Uday Jagtap, and sought his permission to mention his work during his US visit.
Adarsh Mitra Mandal started an initiative of encouraging all households in its Dhanakwadi area to display the name and a small picture of a legendary personality and details of his or her contribution to society on a display board outside their homes. According to Jagtap, every house has a different individual displayed on a name plate so passers-by get inspired. These include Mother Teressa, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and others.
Fred Rooney, director of the Touro College Centre for post-graduate development came to know about it through Aghav's resentation. He invited Jagtap to US but Jagtap insisted that Rooney come and see the work. Roney came all the way from US. He was so impressed that he has assured Jagtap he would start this initiative in New York.
Slum kids to Skype with sports stars
Adarsh Mitra Mandal had also started a sports library for slum children so that they can read and get inspired to take up sports as career. Rooney has assured Jagtap of undertaking a joint venture in which legendary sports figures from US would interact with youth in Pune via Skype or other platforms. Jagtap said that this project would start in next two months.
