On Saturday morning, a 26-year-old girl hanged herself inside the bathroom of Jaslok hospital-run nursing college. College authorities have said that the young woman was under tremendous pressure to complete the course. A suicide note was found by Gamdevi police in which the student allegedly absolved anyone of blame for her death. She wrote that she was taking the extreme step as she was not performing well in her nursing course.

According to police, Narayani Awasthi, had completed her graduation in Uttar Pradesh and had taken admission in the nursing college run by Jaslok hospital in 2014. She was a third year student of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Hospital authorities said that Awasthi was not performing well in the academics, which could have pushed her to end her life.

"The student was alone in the hotel room on Saturday morning, when she went inside the bathroom and hanged herself from the shower pipe. Her roommates knocked on the bathroom door but did not get any response, following which college authorities were informed," said a Gamdevi police officer.

"We had to break open the door and then we found her hanging from the shower pipe. We have sent the body for a post-mortem," said the officer.

Netaji Bhopale, Senior Inspector, Gamdevi police station, said, "We have found a suicide note which does not blames anyone for the extreme step, and are investigating further. We suspect she was not performing well in her exams, which pushed her to end her life after failing to fulfil family expectations."

"A case of accidental death has been registered while college authorities have informed her relatives and parents, and will take the body into custody. We are taking the statements of her roommates to ascertain the reason behind her death," said Bhopale.

Jaslok hospital spokesperson said, "We are disturbed about the demise of the student. It could be that she was under pressure as she could not cope with the expectations of the course. She was not performing well, hence her poor performance could have led her to take this drastic step."
