The students of Mumbai University who are a part of the National Service Scheme (NSS) programme may be giving guided tours to visitors in the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale zoo at Byculla.

The zoo officials are inviting the varsity's NSS students as volunteers to educate the visitors on the various birds and animals that are enclosed in the Byculla zoo. According to sources, the zoo officials have informally met the authorities from the Mumbai University and the first round of discussion on the issue has already concluded.

The zoo officials have taken various initiatives to impart knowledge about flora and fauna to students in schools and colleges. Earlier, teachers from the BMC schools were invited to gain knowledge about the animals and birds in the zoo. The teachers, in turn, got their students to spread the same knowledge in organised field trips to the zoo.

"It is just a proposal now which has only been verbally communicated. We are yet to finalise the proposal in writing. Once the new academic year begins, we would like to conduct a meeting of all the NSS coordinators in order to explain the idea to them. It will be a good idea to have the NSS students in the zoo. The students will stand near the enclosure and provide information about birds and animals to visitors. The University has also liked the idea," said a zoo official.

BS Bidawe, NSS Program Coordinator, University of Mumbai, said, "This is a very good initiative. We would like our students to explore the world and learn new things through such activities. We have our support and are waiting for the colleges to start so that this idea can be implemented soon."
