The cash-starved Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport ( BEST) undertaking has been failing to attract commuters even after revising ticket fares last year. The undertaking has now come up with health incentives in the form of free health check-ups and waivers on medical tests to lure commuters to purchase monthly or quarterly passes and use its e-purse.

In the scheme, the bus pass and e-purse holders and loyal electricity bill payers can avail incentives like free annual health check ups, 50 percent discount on medical tests and 20 percent off on hospitalisation. The scheme is available at four hospitals BEST has signed MoUs with, namely CritiCare Hospital in both Andheri East and West, Balaji Hospital in Byculla, Kenia Eye Hospital in Santacruz, Vasan Eye care in Vashi, Borivali, Mulund, Thane, and Dombivali.

Jagdish Patil, General Manager, BEST, said, "The scheme will attract commuters. The users just have to show their bus pass and paid electricity bills to avail the benefits. We want our consumers to know that we care for their health also."

For availing the facility one needs to own a monthly bus pass, Rs 100 in e-purse and latest paid electricity bill.

BEST, which saw 43.79 lakh commuters in 2009, had only 28.99 lakh commuters in 2016.

& Analysis:

BEST had been facing major fiscal crunch and required to explore ways to attract commuters.

Healthcare schemes would serve just the purpose, and hopefully with immediate effect.

Officials believe this move will prove a winner in expanding their dwindling commuter base
