If the stress of board exams wasn't enough, students appearing for the secondary school certificate (SSC) and higher secondary certificate (HSC) examinations next year have another burden to shoulder. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), in a circular issued on , has made it mandatory for students to mention their Aadhaar card numbers while filling their exam form. The state government wants to keep a track on grade nine students, whether they appear or not for the SSC board exam, who were failed by their respective schools.

MSBSHSE chairman Gangadhar Mhamane said, "Most students fail in grade nine and some of them do not ppear for board exams. It has also come to our notice that students who are kept back by their schools in grade nine to achieve 100% results in the SSC board exam, clear the grade ten hurdle when they appear for it privately. Students will not be debarred from the exam if they do not furnish their Aadhaar card details, but the process will help the government keep a check on these students."

Mhamane said the education department has also issued a government resolution in which all schools have been instructed to allow students to reappear for grade nine exams if they fail. Currently, SSC and HSC students are allowed to reappear for exams in July, thereby helping them save a year and obtain admission in junior college. Similarly, grade nine students will be given a chance to reappear for their exam in June month once school begins.

This step was taken after the education department conducted a survey to ascertain the number of students "failed by their schools" in grade nine and the students who pass the board exam.
