Not registered as voter yet? Hurry, only a week left!

If you are 18 or above and have yet not registered as a voter, you just have a week more to do so. With election dates likely to be announced in the coming week, the registration would perhaps go on latest till September 10-12. The electoral rolls would be sealed before the process of nomination for candidates begins, soon after announcement of election dates.
However, as per law, the cut-off date for enrolment for this assembly polls is January 1, 2014. So, those of you who turned 18 after January 1 will only be able to enrol after the assembly polls.

How to check your name in the voter list?
Call the election commission helpline numbers 1950/1800221950
Send an SMS giving your 10-digit voter identity number on 869889966
Visit the election commission website ceo.maharashtra.gov.in

How to register as voter?
Check the details of your nearest Voter Help Center on ceo.maharashtra.gov.in
Visit the centre/mobile vans with the required documents that must include passport-sized photographs, and address and age proof (passport, birth certificate, driving licence, ration card etc)

Till when can you register?
Registration forms are accepted until 10 days before the first day for filing of nominations for candidates. Election dates are likely to be announced immediately after the last day of Ganpati immersion

Making registration easy
To make the registration process easier, collectors' offices in both suburbs and island city have installed mobile vans which will remain functional on weekends too.
"We would like to request all eligible voters to check their names in the electoral rolls, and in case their names are found to be missing, they must enrol before the rolls are sealed. The commission won't be able to do anything to help anyone once the rolls are sealed," said Nitin Gadre, chief electoral officer, Maharashtra.

EC reiterates rules
The election commission has also been issuing repeated messages to inform that having a voter identity card does not make one eligible to vote. "It is important to ensure that your name is on the electoral list to be able to vote," Gadre added.
As per the rule, the model code of conduct has to come into force within 21 days from the first day of nominations for candidates. Going by speculations, the polls are likely to be held in the state sometime around the second week of October. The dates are being decided keeping Dussehra, which is in the first week, and Diwali, which is in the fourth week, in consideration.
The dates are more or less expected to be around the same as for the 2009 polls, which were held on October 13. The tenure of the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly will come to an end on November 8, thereby making it mandatory for the new assembly to be constituted latest by the same date.
