The parents of 12 students of St Mary's (SSC) Mazgaon have written to the south zone education department raising many complaints about the school. A major complaint that figures in the letter is about students being forced to urinate in dustbins for want of toilets in each floor of the school.

A PT teacher of this school was recently arrested by the Byculla police for sending lewd messages to one of the students.

It was after the prime minister had recently assured people that every school would have toilets that the parents of St Mary's SSC decided to take up the issue with the education inspector.

According to the complaint, the school does not have toilets in each of its floors, which as per Right to Education Act, it should have. And, teachers often refuse students permission to go to the toilet which is located in the ground floor at the backside of the school. Students are hence forced to urinate in the dustbin when they can no longer hold back.

The suspended PT teacher also used to take Hindi classes. As he no longer attends school, the portion he was supposed to take remains incomplete, the complaint further says. Parents, however, do not want that particular teacher to come back to the school.

Parents also want school authorities to ban teachers bringing phones to the school. They allege that teachers who beat up children take their (children) pictures later on the phone.

One of the parents who wrote to the education dept, told dna on condition of anonymity: "We have given a written complaint to the south zone education inspector demanding that steps be taken to stop anomalies in the school. Since the last seven years, parents have been asking the school authorities to construct toilets on each floor of the school, but in vain."

When contacted, school principal Baptist Pinto said: "We are addressing the issue."

Fr Francis Swamy, coordinator, Jesuit school board, said: "We have applied to the BMC for permission to build toilets in each floor. We are awaiting BMC reply. The school has also recruited a substitute teacher to teach students PT and Hindi. Parents need not worry over this."

BB Chavan, south zone education inspector, said: "I was out of state attending an educational training. I will look into the complaint. The teacher of the school who was recently arrested is under suspension as he had been jailed for 48 hours."
