Over the last two days, more than 108 stray dogs and cats found new homes through Adoptathon, one of the largest adoption camps in the city, organised by NGO World For All (WFA). Over 1,600 people attended the event.

“I had a loving mongrel long ago which died, so when we heard about this adoption camp, I decided it was time for my child to have a companion too,” says Meghna Haldankar, a Khar resident who adopted a little pup named Dolly for her 6-year-old son.

Another Malad resident who dropped by couldn’t resist the charms of little Mumbles, and ended up adopting her as an addition to her six dogs at home.

The event was attended by well-known figures such as Bollywood actor Imran Khan, human rights activist Harish Iyer, and TV actress and model Nisha Rawal, among others. “If we adopt a more strategic approach to sterilising, vaccinating and adoption like they have done here, we will surely solve the stray dog issue that people seem to think we have. It is a wonderful initiative and people should partner with NGOs more to rehabilitate our more-than-faithful strays,” said Iyer.

Recent incidents show that Mumbai Police has started taking an interest in animal abuse cases.

Last week itself, two cases of cruelty against animals were registered, where the officers took prompt action.
