After facing flak for more than two years for not being able to solve the garbage collection and transportation mess, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is now going hi-tech. And it is perhaps the only civic body in the country to install RFID system in vehicles transporting garbage and also in garbage bins.

Last week, the general body and standing committee cleared the proposal for appointment of contractor for garbage collection and transportation. Giving details of the new hi-tech system, mayor Sagar Naik and municipal commissioner Abasaheb Jarhad said, "We will be installing RFID system for vehicles and garbage bins. This will help us to monitor when the garbage was lifted in a particular area. The entire system will be monitored and controlled from the head office where the entire data will be available."

New fibre bins will also be installed in various nodes of the satellite city. "Every day in the first eight hours, garbage will be lifted in the city and officials in the head office will be able to monitor the progress of work," said Naik. Of late, the corporation had been facing a lot of criticism for failing to address garbage woes of the city as the proposal for garbage collection and transportation was caught in a legal tangle all these years.

The mayor said, "Garbage collected is disposed of scientifically at the landfill site in Turbhe and manure and fuel pallets are manufactured from the waste."

A system will identify wet and dry garbage and also debris that is dumped in the dustbin. It will detect the amount of waste deposited in the bin and send a signal to the control room and accordingly, vehicles can be sent to clear the garbage. This will also ensure that contractors collect the garbage on a regular basis. Civic officials hoped that with the new system, the number of complaints regarding overflowing garbage bins and contractors neglecting their work, will drop.

The civic body has awarded garbage collection and transportation proposal for Rs1,700 per metric tonne for a period of seven years.
