“Don't respect me because I am sister or daughter or wife. Respect me because I AM!”, "Don't wrap up that sanitary pad like a concealed BOMB. It won't go off. I may just, though!” and similar messages are being splattered all over, making news. Welcome Lajja Diaries—a new-age way of fighting sexism and giving voice to women in order to empower them.

Breaking the silence

Lajja Diaries is an innovative digital platform created by a 360-degree marketing and design agency Di-Mentions Studio. This digital platform is designed to bring women from across the world together to share their views and support other women who have been victims of sexual or physical abuse. The idea behind this platform is to ‘Shed the Shame and Share because real violence is in your silence’. Lajja Diaries revolves around listening to and telling stories of women’s personal battles, which makes it a small but important step in them being recognised as equals.

How it all started

Anoushka Adya, Founder, Di-Mentions Studios, adds, “Lajja Diaries started off as Di-Mentions' flagship Corporate Social Responsibility programme and is an integral part of our philanthropic nature. The initiative was conceived with a lot of soul on the second anniversary of the horrific Nirbhaya rape. Now into its second year of operation, the initiative is being scaled up in terms of its efforts and operations to integrate it with on-ground support as well.”

A social experiment

The first project under ‘Lajja Diaries’ is called ‘Words on the Street’, which the company has just rolled out. It involved the team taking to the city streets to ask women in public spaces about instances when they felt that sexism is a real thing that has a tangible effect on their everyday lives. This social experiment has been well received. Adya adds, “We genuinely believe that if we stand together, all women can become a support system for each other. Hence, we took the first step and stood for women out there. We are becoming instrumental in trying to remove certain myths prevalent in society that make women the weaker gender.” Till date, Lajja Diaries has over 24,000 women following it online. The team is now in talks with various NGOs to create a stronger network to move from awareness to counsel and support.
