Sanjay Punewar and his wife Alka, the small-time Marathi actress who faked her death to get away from him, on Monday filed for divorce in the Thane family court which would clear the way for her to live with her boyfriend.
“This morning, the two mutually filed for divorce,” said Nandkumar Rajurkar, their advocate. He explained that as the couple are Hindus the procedure would take about 180 days.
The Punewars have agree that the husband will bear all expenses related to the upbringing of their twin boys — Pratik and Piyush — and Alka has given him the power of attorney to settle all financial matters. Among these issues is the ownership of their house, which is held jointly and was bought on a loan. Alka went missing on December 28. A couple of days later, Alka’s car was found in a valley at Khopoli along with her bag and phone.
She was traced to Chennai where she went together with Alok Paliwal, whom she had been in a relationship with for over a year. The Khopri police, which has dealt with the case, said there was no reason for them to interfere in the Punewars personal matter. “We had a missing complaint and the case has been solved. If they file for divorce or whatever, we will not interfere in their personal matters,” said R Vaidya, assistant police inspector.
Sanjay said, “I want to live in peace and so we have signed the divorce papers. If she had told me this earlier, I would have let her go before. I am ashamed. But I am concerned about the children and will take care of them on my own.” Sanjay also said he had received a call for a job with a private company and he hoped to start work soon.
Alka said, “I have given Sanjay the power of attorney to manage the bank accounts, housing loan and whatever other legal issues.” She said she was leaving for Bangalore along with her boyfriend on Monday night.
