A 38-year-old woman was murdered by her nephew in Nagpada on Monday evening after she scolded him for wasting his time and not looking for work. The accused, who escaped from the spot after murdering his aunt, was arrested by the Nagpada police in the wee hours of Tuesday.

According to the Nagpada police, the deceased, who is a resident of Nagpada, has been identified as Mehrunisa Abdul Chaudhary. On Monday evening, Chaudhary's nephew Sonu, who lived nearby with his parents, had come visit his aunt. Chaudhary, concerned about her nephew's waywardness, allegedly scolded him for wasting his time and not taking up any proper job. Chaudhary and Sonu allegedly had a heated argument over the issue, after which, in a fit of rage, he allegedly tried to strangulate her.

"Sonu is Chaudhary's brother's son and would frequently come to visit her. On Monday, Chaudhary scolded him as he was not working anywhere and had fallen into bad company," said Shivaji Kadam, a senior police inspector of Nagpada police station. He added: "The accused first strangulated her and when he realised that she had not died, he stabbed her with a kitchen knife before escaping from the place."

Chaudhary was rushed to hospital by her neighbours and she was declared dead after admission. The Nagpada police have placed Sonu under arrest and booked him for murder.
