The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) wants Reliance Infrastructure-led Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) to increase the number of coaches in Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro-1 corridor to increase carrying capacity with increasing ridership resulting in crowding at Andheri and Ghatkopar Metro stations.

The Metro-1 easily carries around 3.40 lakh passengers daily on weekdays. It has also carried more than 4 lakh passengers in a single day on several days. The year 2017-18 witnessed a growth of 13% in ridership for the entire Metro-1 corridor when compared to same period last year.

RA Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, said, “We have never denied on allowing MMOPL to increase the number of coaches. I have already asked them earlier, and also during a recent meeting to increase the number of coaches. MMOPL can do it as per the agreement.”

When asked about revenue sharing for buying of new coaches, Rajeev said, “They (MMOPL) has never said anything like we will have to share revenue so I believe we don’t have to contribute anything. Also increasing coaches will benefit them in terms of revenue.”

Meanwhile, MMOPL on the other hand has increased the number of trips to cater increasing ridership and has also claimed in past of monitoring ridership constantly for procuring more coaches or having more trains to run when the need arises.

Starting Saturday, MMOPL also increased the number of trips to 386 from 382. This additional trips during peak hours, will handle at least 6,000 commuters. MMOPL in a statement said, “In last one year, we have increased our train services from 370 to 382. We are further increasing our train services to 386, including 4 services in peak hours, which shall ease the traffic.”

The statement added, “In addition to the above, we have done improvements/additions to ticketing counters, AFC (automatic fare collection) gates and security facilities to ensure commuter convenience.”
