In just one hour, the fire at the 15th floor flat in NRI phase-II in Nerul smoked valuables worth Rs2.5 crore, leaving behind only the remains. It was hardly ten minutes when Vinay Sharma, owner of the flat No1502 of Seawoods Estate, popularly known as NRI complex in sector 50 in Nerul, had come home on Wednesday night. And he was shocked to see flames coming out from the bedroom which is attached to the kitchen of the pent house. Sharma went to check and immediately started to douse the fire, however, his attempt could not bring down the flame.
"I rushed to the neighbours in flat No1501 and sought help. Together, we brought water in buckets and tried to douse the fire, but were not able to control the fire," said Sharma.
The Sharmas had moved into this flat in 2011. They had never imagined that fire of such a magnitude would engulf their abode. The family had recently done up the interiors and had spent huge amount of money. The fire was brought under control around 1.40am on Thursday by Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Cidco fire brigade teams. Fortunately, no one hurt in the fire as it was restricted to just one flat.
Sharma's relatives came to rescue of the family the next day. "My cousin and other family members came to help us," said Sharma, pointing out to one of his cousins.
"It is a difficult time for the family to recover from the losses. We need to stand by them," said Mahendra Singh, Sharma's neighbour and owner of flat No1501. Singh got to know about the fire through WhatsApp message.
"We have a WhatsApp group of all the NRI residents where we share society-related issues," said Singh, adding, "This is the time when we should support Sharma as he has to rebuild his home." The impact of the fire was also seen in Singh's flat which is adjacent to the Sharmas.
The Sharmas are currently staying with their relatives in Chembur and Kharghar. "Once we get out of current problem, we will rebuild our home," said Sharma.
