Four people were arrested in the Panvel church attack case. Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis is likely to make a statement in the assembly. He had asked police to find and arrest the men who attacked a church in Navi Mumbai in 48 hours on Monday.
The four persons Rahul Patil, Anilchandra Chauhan, Mohammed Tabrek Sheikh and Laksham Sugvekar were running an illegal club which was raided by the police, iam.in sources said. The police raided the club after a complaint was filed against it. The four arrested reportedly believed that the Saint George Catholic church had filed a complaint against their club and plotted revenge against it.
The Navi Mumbai catholic church was then attacked in the wee hours of Saturday.
Two of the accused on a motorcycle at around 1:30 am they hurled stones at the church located near a bridge in the area. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera and the footage has been verified by the police.
Fadnavis' assurance came after a delegation of various Christian organisations, led by BJP MLA Ashish Shelar from Bandra (West), called on him at Vidhan Bhavan in the afternoon. The delegation comprised representatives of the National Christian Council of India, Mumbai Catholic Sabha and United Christian Council of Mumbai.
Maharashtra government on Monday said that it suspects a "political hand" in the recent attack on a church in Navi Mumbai, even as the Opposition members walked out of the Assembly in protest against the incident.
Minority Affairs Minister Eknath Khadse said in the Legislative Assembly that the state government was conducting a probe into the incident and culprits would be dealt with sternly. "A foreign hand, anti-social elements or a political person may be involved in the incident. A political hand cannot be ruled out. Detailed facts would be revealed before the end of the ongoing Legislature session," Khadse said.
The minister said his government was committed to protect the lives and properties of citizens. "We will take care to ensure that such inappropriate incidents do not take place in future," he said.
