National-level gymnastic event begins in Thane

Thane Zilla Gymnastics Association along with Maharashtra Amateur Gymnastics Association will be organising the 23rd National Rhythmic Gymnasts Competition.

It is for the first time that it will be held in Thane. From among the 11 states that will participate, there will be 230 participants. The competition will be held at the Badminton hall of Dadoji Kondev stadium from June 8 to 10.

The competition will take place in five rounds, starting from under-8, under-10, under-12, under-16 juniors and above 16 are seniors. For the first time, a special group event will also be held, where five participants will perform together. The variety in the performance will be through free hand, hoop, ball, clubs, ribbon. The winners will be given certificates and medals.

"Last year, when the nationals were held at Punjab, 80% of the students were from Thane. Even this year, in each of the five criteria we have at least six participants from Thane. This event will also be an all India trial for those participating in the Common Wealth Games this year," says Pooja Surve, international gymnast player and coach.

Civic chief Aseem Gupta will be inaugurating the event, followed by various competitions. On the second day, the seniors, under-10 and under-12 events with props will take place. On the final day, there will be group events. Actors Mahesh Manjarekar and Sachin Khedekar will be attending.

The participating states are Punjab, Chandigarh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana and Maharashtra. "It is an honour to have received an opportunity to host the event and people from across the country will be present. We will put in our best to make it a grand success," adds Surve.
