Besides seeking an extension from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) asking them to collect waste for three more months, a number of societies at Napean Sea Road are now looking at alternative ways to do away with the waste they generate.

One of the options being considered is reaching out to agencies that treat waste. The process would entail having the agency go to the society, collect waste, treat it at their centres and give the compost to societies.

"We are in talks for such an arrangement. We are also planning to get a machine that can compost, and another one that can make a charcoal-like product which can be then sold as insecticide," said Pranav Pasari, resident of Darya Mahal, on Napean Sea Road which houses 20 flats.

The residents are considering giving away of waste to agencies as it will not require any space and each flat will be charged Rs 200 per month. "The kind of investment societies will have to make should be done by the BMC. They are not collecting due to lack of space, it is the same reason why societies are also finding it difficult to have a plant in their societies," said Mukul Mehra, honorary secretary of Napean Sea Road Citizens Forum and resident of Embassy Apartments which has 47 flats.
