Nalasopara woman's death raises swine flu scare, another tests positive

The deceased, Arti Tiwari, a resident of Gala Nagar in Nalasopara (East), was admitted at Alliance hospital's isolation ward ICU on Tuesday afternoon for cough, fever and respiratory disorder, which are also symptoms of swine flu. Due to breathlessness, Tiwari was kept on the ventilator. But soon her condition deteriorated and she died on Thursday morning.

Health officers from the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation went into tizzy on Thursday after they were informed about a suspected swine flu death in a hospital in Nalasopara. A team rushed to inspect the residence of the 35-year-old deceased and also conducted a survey in the locality, only to be told a while later that her reports had come negative for the dreaded airborne virus.

Meanwhile, another woman from Nalasopara, who has tested positive for swine flu, has been admitted for treatment.

The deceased, Arti Tiwari, a resident of Gala Nagar in Nalasopara (East), was admitted at Alliance hospital's isolation ward ICU on Tuesday afternoon for cough, fever and respiratory disorder, which are also symptoms of swine flu. Due to breathlessness, Tiwari was kept on the ventilator. But soon her condition deteriorated and she died on Thursday morning.

Condition of the other Nalasopara woman, aged 50, has worsened. She was shifted to Jaslok Hospital from Kharghar hospital.

"The patient was referred from another hospital, we immediately put her on ventilator and gave her a dose of heavy antibiotics and also sent her blood sample for testing. We have informed the health officials and told her family that her chances of survival are very less," said Dr Sunil Joshi.

Medical officer Anupama Rane said, "We had sent a team for conducting a survey and inspection. Though the reports of the 35-year-old are negative, we are prepared for tackling such incidents and are conducting awareness programmes."
