A 29-year-old Nalasopara builder had a miraculous escape late on Tuesday night when three unidentified assailants pumped four bullets into him. While one bullet struck him on the hand, two hit his abdomen and one passed just above his heart.

According to the police, Javed Ansari, along with two of his friends, was outside the traffic police godown around 11.30pm on Tuesday when three persons on a bike pumped at least four bullets in him. His friends fled from the spot. Bleeding profusely, Ansari first took shelter in a residential building and then reached a police chowki almost 500m from the spot of the incident. He was immediately admitted to hospital. His condition was reported to be stable.

Police said a sophisticated weapon was used for firing and personal enmity seemed to be the motive. "The assailants had come to kill Ansari. One of his two friends was also hit by a beer bottle," said a senior police official. "We suspect that Ansari had personal enmity with some people. This could be a supari killing as well. We will have to investigate further," he added.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Palghar) Shrikrishna Kokate said, "We have registered a case under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under relevant sections of the Indian Arms Act. We have detained a few suspects for questioning and will soon arrest the accused."
