A day after the tragic incident where a car fell from the second floor car parking lot into the car lift pit killing two people, Nagpada police have stumbled upon two important aspects of the case.

"We have came to know that minor Hafiz Patel (14) was driving the car. When the incident took place, he was trying his luck at the wheels for the second time," said Shivaji Kadam, senior police inspector of Nagpada police station.

Meanwhile, it was also revealed that the entire incident was witnessed by a man who decided not utter a word to anyone.

Nagpada police while carrying out the investigation into the case scanned the CCTV footages of the parking lot of the 23-storey Iqbal Heights located. "While we were scanning the footages there were two crucial information that was revealed. In the footage it was seen that Patel was behind the wheels and Javed was sitting next to him. At around 12:10 pm, Patel moved the car couple of feet and then got it back to the place where it was parked," said an officer from Nagpada police station.

He further said: "The first successful attempt to move the vehicle seemed to give confidence to Patel after which he attempted to get the vehicle out of the parking lot. He drove it towards the car lift and dashed on the door after which the car fell into the pit."

Interestingly, while scanning the CCTV footages, the police also came across a visual where an unknown man witnessed the entire incident. However, he chose not to alert anyone. "There is a servants toilet just few feet away from the car lift and in the footages it is seen that a man emerges out of the toilet when the car falls into the pit. The man is seen running towards the lift but within seconds he is also seen leaving the place," said a police officer.

He added: "The man in the CCTV footages has not been identified and we are trying to ascertain his identity."

Following the revelation that deceased Patel was driving the car, Nagpada Police booked Patel under section 304(a) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and section 279 (rash driving) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with sections of motor vehicle act. While the driver of Patel family who was teaching Patel to drive has been booked under section 5 (responsibility of owners of motor vehicles for contravention).

"After seeing the CCTV footage we were able to ascertain that Patel was driving the car and Javed was sitting next to him and we have booked both of them as per law," said Kadam.
