The gangland rivalry spilled over into a courtroom in Mumbai when an accused in a brutal murder case stabbed a co-accused after they were brought to the session court on Thursday afternoon for a scheduled hearing.

The main accused in the murder case Uday Shankar Pathak, 32, attacked Kalpesh Patel, 28, with a sharp piece of metal.

In April 2014, Pathak was found running an extortion racket using a mobile phone he had smuggled into Arthur Road Jail. According to eyewitnesses, as Patel was brought in, Pathak pounced on him. The police guard however intervened and separated the two men immediately.

According to police, both the accused have been lodged in Arthur Road jail. Pathak is upset at Patel as the latter turned approver (prosecution witness) in the murder case that they allegedly committed together. “In the attack, Patel has sustained minor injury and  Patel was immediately rushed to the nearest hospital from where he was discharged after the treatment. A case has been registered in Colaba police station against Pathak,” said ManojKumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police(Zone I).

Bloody murder

Pathak is facing trial for killing four people in Malad, whose charred bodies were found in the deserted hilly area of Appapada in 2011.
Pathak and his gang allegedly kidnapped and  murdered them in retaliation for a minor face-off the previous evening.
