The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) that is probing the case of Mumbra resident Tabrez Noor Mohammad Tambe, who is believed to have joined the Islamic State (IS) in Libya, has managed to trace some financial transactions between Tambe and his associate, a Saudi national.

The probe also revealed that Tabrez had also deposited large sums of money in his brother's account, which was later used to get a visa and buy tickets for Egypt, from where he travelled to Libya.

According to the ATS, on November 04, 2016, accused Ali Al Shahri, a Saudi Arabia national whose passport was issued from Riyadh, had sent Rs 26,883 to Tabrez through a money transfer.

"Further on January 5 and January 8, this year, Tabrez had deposited Rs 4.20 lakh and Rs 97,000 in the account of his brother Saud. The money was deposited to book air travel for Tabrez and Ali to travel from Mumbai to Cairo, Cairo to Dar-es-Salam and back, and Cairo to Khartoum and back (only for Tabrez as Ali was to travel separately). It is being investigated whether the duo undertook the journeys or not," said an ATS officer.

He added, the ATS is also probing whether visa applications for Egypt through Satvik Travels in Delhi and ticketing through Make My Trip at Gurgaon were done using money received through a money transfer service. Investigation are also on in Ratnagiri district.

Ali and Tabrez were co-workers in Riyadh. After Tabrez returned to India, Ali too had visited Tabrez's family in Mumbra and possibly stayed with them as well. The duo had visited a couple places in and around Mumbai too.

In January 2016, Tabrez left for Egypt on the pretext of a job. Tabrez was in constant contact via calls, emails and other modes of communication with his wife, mother and his brother since the time he left the country. "It was only recently that they got a call from Tabrez who informed them that he had reached Libya to fight alongside IS. The family tried to deter him, but failed, and hence, his brother registered a complaint earlier this month," said another ATS officer.

The agency had already seized mobile phones of Tambe's family members along with laptops and a couple of other gadgets and documents from their residence.
