A man who would dupe diamond traders from Singapore has been arrested by the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) police. The accused used to browse diamond trading websites, call up traders and induce them into handing over the diamonds to carriers.

The arrested person has been identified as 29-year-old Imran Khan, a high school graduate and resident of Santa Cruz (E).

According to senior inspector Kundalik Nigade of BKC police, in 2014, two diamond traders had lodged a complaint with them about being duped by a man who operates from Singapore.

Nigade added that an investigation into the matter revealed that Khan would surf a diamond trading website and call up traders listed there. "He would propose to buy diamonds and fix the deal after gaining the victims' trust. He would also drop names of big companies from which he had purchased diamonds. He would then send his carriers to pick up the gems from the traders, and switch off his phone," said Nigade.

As per the police, as of now, two traders from BKC have been duped to the tune of Rs31 lakh and Rs8 lakh by Khan using this modus operandi.

Nigade also said that in 2014, his team caught three carriers who worked for Khan. "During their interrogation, we came to know that Khan is operating from Singapore. Since Khan operated from abroad, a lookout circular was issued against him. Thereafter he got another passport made, went to Nepal and then entered Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh in November 2014," Nigade added.

Khan has since been hiding in India under a different name, and was arrested on June 2 from Goregaon on receipt of specific information.

Khan has been booked for criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy under relevant sections of the IPC and Information Technology Act, and is currently under police custody till June 6, police said.
