There is no doubt that the rail premises are looking cleaner than before. The 'Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat' study has stated that people have appreciated the cleanliness. To take this forward, the Western Railway (WR) has created a new post called 'Change Agent', which will be responsible for overseeing the cleanliness at railway stations; starting August 15.

In the initial phase, these 'Change Agents' will be present at eight stations, including Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra Terminus, Andheri, Borivali, Vasai Road and Virar. These agents will keep a tab on the cleanliness of stations, pay & use and surrounding areas within the station premises. They shall also carry anti-spitting and littering campaigns and also levy fines under relevant clauses on Railway Act.

"Various cleanliness activities will be conducted on these stations, in addition to creating awareness about penalty, and other deterrent actions if found littering. The entry of unauthorised persons into platforms, hawkers and illegal vendors on FOBs will be checked," said Ravinder Bhakar, Chief PRO, Western Railway.

In Mumbai, Bandra station under A1 category stood first as the cleanest station, while it stands 7th across the country. The Western Railway stands fifth in ranking across the 16 railway zones. On the other hand, the worrying bit for Central Railway is that its ranking had dropped from the 3rd to the 8th position this year.

"We have taken efforts, including assigning more people at railway stations, and giving stations on a contractual basis, to ensure that cleanliness is not compromised. Big terminus stations are nearly one lakh sq.metres huge and keeping them clean is a challenge," said a CR official.

Two stations of Mumbai CSMT and Dadar in A1 category have shown drastic improvement in terms of cleanliness. According to the survey findings, of the 407 stations, only 39 stations scored over 90 per cent, while 125 stations scored between 70-80 per cent.

The report mentions that on overall parameters like availability of dustbins, seating, FOBs and other amenities, there has been a drastic improvement.
