Decision taken in order to have proper traffic movement to negate obstruction created by the barricades erected
In order have proper access for the traffic movement due to barricading for construction of Metro corridors in western suburb, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to widen portion of road on Linking Road at Dahisar and Western Express Highway near National Park. The MMRDA has said that current width of both the roads is insufficient and starting construction work of Metro may reduce the existing road, and hence the widening is being proposed by MMRDA.
Construction of two Metro corridors is going on on Link Road and WEH, namely the Dahisar-DN Nagar Metro-2A corridor and the Dahisar East-Andheri East Metro-7 corridor. While the construction work started in 2016, at several stretches the civil construction work is yet to be started that also include major interchages.
One example is opposite the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) where the erecting of piers has already started but the service road on the opposite side of SGNP is quite narrow and further having barricades would decrease the width making it difficult for movement of traffic.
Another is near the Anand Nagar in Dahisar east where the Metro alignment is nearby the road over bridge coming from Dahisar west to Dahisar east. The service roads on both side of the ROB is very narrow, and thus widening is proposed.
The MMRDA also came out with a notification in the same regards informing about the widening. At WEH, the service road will be widened from 200 feet to 230 feet and in case of Dahisar Link Road, the width will be increased from 120 feet to 140 feet. A MMRDA official informed, “We will acquire the structures that are coming in the way of widening of the roads, and will compensate them via issuing transfer of development rights, appropriately.”
The notification issued by MMRDA reads: “After conducting a transport study, it has been revealed that the existing width of the road is insufficient and commencement of the construction of Metro work may result in reduction of existing road width thereby causing issues regarding appropriate accesses/ emergency accesses to the properties along the road.”
Meanwhile, currently around 60 per cent of the civil work is completed for Metro-2A and Metro-7. The civil works on both lines is expected to be over by mid-2019, and commercial operations is expected to start by 2020.
