Mumbai university takes steps to ensure correct assessment

To ensure that students do not suffer due to lack of uniformity and errors in the marking system, Mumbai university's commerce faculty has decided to conduct subject-wise meetings to discuss the system ahead of the start of moderation of the ongoing examinations.

On Tuesday, over 375 teachers and principals from commerce colleges in Mumbai and Thane attended a meeting convened by the dean, faculty of commerce, Madhu Nair, to discuss the matter pertaining to the marking system in the subjects of financial accounting and auditing paper, VIII, IX and X and direct and indirect taxes in the TYBCom (semester VI CBGS) exams. The over 65,000 students who appeared for the two exams will be evaluated under the credit-based grading system for the first time.

In its February 23 edition, dna had reported that 90% of the students of BMS, which also comes under the commerce faculty, had failed in one paper as the university had sent the wrong model answers to all examiners. After a probe, the university decided to give 10 grace marks in the internal exam to those who had scored more than 14 in it. Several TYBCom students also had to apply for revaluation due to discrepancies in the marking system.

The next meeting will be held on April 19. The meetings will include basic discussion over the model answers and marking system to ensure that there is uniformity in the corrections.
