The Saki Naka Police on Tuesday arrested two persons in connection with the murder of a Congress party worker. The Congress worker was allegedly stabbed after he had written a post on Facebook recently stating that Congress would come to power in 2019 and had praised senior Congress leader Arif Nasim Khan for his work in the constituency.

"We have arrested two persons — Jitendra Mishra and Umesh Thakur — in connection with the murder of Manoj Dubey," said NC Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 10.

The arrested duo, who are reportedly members of BJP Yuva Morcha, were produced before a local court, which remanded them to police custody till October 29.

According to police, three motives have surfaced so far that led to Dubey's murder. "Mishra and Thakur claimed that Dubey used to harass them. As per Thakur, Dubey used to beat him up as he belonged to a rival party. Another reason was that Dubey had posted a comment on Facebook regarding 2019 elections after which heated arguments took place between Dubey and his rivals. The immediate cause became an altercation that took place on Sunday night. Dubey has again bashed up Mishra and Thakur on Sunday, after which they came back armed with a sword and stabbed him. As of now, the role of only these two persons have surfaced; if the probe reveals involvement of more people, action will be taken against them," said a police officer.

He added, Dubey had a riot case registered against him at Saki Naka Police Station and an attempt to murder case at Ghatkopar Police Station.

DNA had on Tuesday reported that Jitendra and Umesh have emerged as prime suspects in Dubey's murder case.

According to police, the incident took place around 1:30 am on Monday, when Dubey, the General Secretary of Mumbai Youth Congress, was on his way home from his workplace. He was also a close aide of Congress leader Arif Nasim Khan.

Khan met Deven Bharti, the Joint Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, on Tuesday, and discussed Dubey's case.
