The Khar police have registered a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust against the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), based in Khar, following a complaint by about 22 students.

The students, who belong to the 2011 batch of two-year PG programmes, that are claimed to be equivalent to MBA, alleged that they were cheated of their results and study trips abroad.

The complaint has been registered against Arindam Chaudhuri, director of IIPM, and some members of the management.

The case comes just days after a Delhi high court ordered the institute not to use terms such as MBA, BBA or management course for the courses it offers and also restrained it from calling itself a management school or business school.

The institute claimed that its Global Opportunities and Threat Analysis (GOTA), a management programme, was affiliated to a university in Belgium. But the students say that they were not taken to the university as was promised. They later learned that the particular university in Belgium was blacklisted.

Akhil Chitre, vice-president of the youth wing of MNS representing the students, said: "None of the students were taken for study tours as promised. There are management programmes supposed to be affiliated with institutes in the US, France and Germany, and students were promised they would be taken on tours there. The students paid between Rs10 lakh and Rs18 lakh for the international programmes."

That apart, students who appeared for exams in the Indian management programme being conducted in association with a university in Tamil Nadu, were not given their results.

"We were supposed to receive the results in 2013. It's been more than a year and our careers are at stake as there is no clue about results. We were forced to sign a declaration stating that we have successfully completed our degrees and that there is no other obligation pending," said a student.

The complaint was initially filed with Bandra police three days ago and subsequently transferred to Khar police. The case has been registered under sections 420 (cheating), 120b (criminal conspiracy) and criminal breach of trust of the IPC.

"We have registered a case and the investigations are on. We are yet to make any arrests," said Dattatray Bhargude, senior police inspector.

The management did not respond to calls and messages.
