MUMBAI: The city's largest complex water treatment plant, also believed to be largest such plant in Asia, will soon acquire electronically-operated actuators for valve operations.

The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) on Monday said the 2,100-million litre per day treatment plant at Bhandup will get the new system at a cost of Rs 60 lakh.

Bhandup Complex water treatment plant controls 70 per cent of the city's water supply and was recently awarded the ISO 9000-2001 certification for consistent high quality water treatment.

"The new actuators will save time and hard labour taken up by valve operations and would also better supervise control and data acquisition," MCGM sources said.

At the equalisation point in Bhandup Complex, six valves, now operated anually, control and regulate water supply to the city's pipelines.

Some require attention even at night, and as the valves are spread over distances of 1.5 km, attending to them manually is difficult, the sources said.

The new electronically-operated actuators will do away with manual operations, making it easier to function, they added.
