People from Thane and areas beyond are on the mercy of autorickshaws due to the inefficient public transport facilities. This leads to fare refusal, drivers misbehaving with the passengers and to combat this misdemeanour by drivers and to make the lives of Thane and Kalyan commuters comfortable, the Thane traffic department has invited the Mumbai autorickshaw driver Sandeep Bacche to train the local drivers in etiquette.

In the last six months, the traffic department has registered over 60,000 cases of autos refusing to ply passengers. "So, it is 10,000 cases per month and this shocking figure got us thinking. We thought something needs to be done pro-actively to tackle this problem," said Rashmi Karandikar, deputy commissioner of police, Thane traffic police.

"Auto drivers are offering a service and they need to learn soft skills to handle commuters politely. So, we decided to rope in Sandeep Bacche who has adopted the good work practices," she said. The workshop will be conducted soon where Bachhe will speak to the drivers on etiquette and work practices.

"Everywhere auto drivers are infamous for their rude behavior towards passenger. So, I will be talking to them on how to be more cooperative and polite," said 38-year-old Bacche, who is famous in Khar-Bandra area of Mumbai for his soft skills and well-mannered behavior.

"I am appreciated by my customers in Mumbai and I want my fraternity to be appreciated for the same," he said.

Why is this auto driver liked by everyone
Bacche's auto, his passengers say, is a mini motel equipped with a fan, a PCO, phone recharge, newspaper, water bottle, chocolates, perfume, Wi-Fi, hot tea, calendar, tissue paper, first aid kit and a fire extinguisher.

"I do not think you need to be rich to do charity and serve mankind. You can serve humanity in your own humble manner," Bacche said adding that he offers a discounted fare of Rs10 instead of current meter rate Rs17 to disabled and senior citizens.

Like other drivers, even he makes the same amount of money and has a family of two schoolgoing children and a wife. "I earn also with the advance bookings that I receive and those people are happy to pay me the amount," Bacche said.

He also offers free ride to passengers on special occasions like New Year's eve and on his favorite Bollywood actor, Sanjay Dutt's birthday. However, on International Women's Day only women commuters are obliged by him. "This is my way of celebrating these special occasions," he said.
