Mumbai police recently celebrated International Day of Peace with Kia Scherr, who lost two of her loved ones in the tragic Mumbai Taj terrorist attack in 2008. Scherr is also the Founder and Co-President of One Life Alliance that was created especially to spread positivity in spite of this tragedy by exploring, developing and implementing practical ways to promote peace and reduce violent behaviour.

Spreading harmony
Scherr partners with schools, business and government leaders all over the world as well as many other organisations to strengthen her mission. Mervyn D'Mello from International Justice Mission shared his experience on how citizens need to change the way they perceive the police force. This, according to him, will help create peace in the citizen-public relationship and will also boost the cops’ morale. D'Mello shared, “We work very closely with the cops and we are well-aware of how they are demonised and looked down upon. However, my work experience with them has changed my perception drastically.”

Chief cop shares his views
Additional Commissioner of Police (south region) Dr. Pratap Dighavkar, who was the chief guest at the event, maintained that preaching peace has, in today’s time, become a necessity. “We have seen more terrorist attacks in the last few years than any time before this. The entire world is one family and it's high time we start believing in it and spread the message of peace worldwide. Since 1997, India has seen around one lakh deaths of people at the hand of terrorists.” The ACP insisted that if cops start their day with a smile and be in the ‘problem-solver’ mode, then a lot of things can be changed.

Book launch
Scherr concluded the event with launching a book, which pertains to meditation and how to be at peace with yourself. She explains, “The purpose of this book is not much to read it, but about the actions mentioned here that we should incorporate in our daily lives to attain peace. The book urges one to practise things like—speaking the truth, honouring your agreements and sharing the inner spirit. This will enable us to adopt a loving behaviour, which will put us at peace with ourselves.”
