Police inspector Anand Bhoir, who was once applauded by the then Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik for his skillful investigation in the kidnapping case of a six-year-old boy from Kandivali in 2011, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths on Tuesday for allegedly accepting a Rs 22 lakh bribe from a wine shop owner.

Bhoir was currently posted with the MIDC unit of the Mumbai Crime Branch. According to the ACB, Bhoir was the investigating officer in a case under the Bombay Prohibition Act registered last year. "In order to not arrest the wanted accused in the case, Bhoir demanded a Rs 25 lakh bribe from the complainant, and later agreed to settle for Rs 22 lakh," said an ACB officer.

He added that the complainant approached ACB with his complaint against Bhoir, after which a trap was laid and Bhoir was caught red-handed when he accepted the amount inside his private vehicle on Tuesday.

In 2011, the Mumbai police had sought Bhoir's help, who was then a police sub-inspector from Thane, to crack a kidnapping case. Within four days of being roped into the probe, the police not only managed to identify and arrest the kidnappers, but also rescued the child from the interiors of Uttar Pradesh. "Bhoir is known for his special ability in solving complicated cases like kidnappings," said a Mumbai police officer.

A 2005-batch state police service officer, Bhoir was earlier posted with the Andheri police, where he had solved a record 300 criminal cases during a three-year tenure. The cases include the murder case of a senior citizen at Saki Naka. Bhoir had also solved a sensational kidnapping case in Mira Road.

In 2013, Bhoir had also sparked controversy by posing with his service revolver for his Facebook profile.
