Final year engineering students of SIES Graduate School of Technology (GST), Nerul get some relief as the engineering college has agreed to send their exam forms to the Mumbai University if they pay some part of the exam and admission fees.

The college had earlier denied them to sit for the final year exam has now filled their exam forms. However, it has agreed to send it to the Mumbai University only if they pay some part of the exam and admission fees to college. More than 30 students of the engineering college, were in a fix after half of them were denied exam forms to appear for the upcoming final year exam, while the other half did not receive their original documents from the college after passing out.

The Social Welfare Department of the state government which was responsible for paying a part of their fees had not paid the scholarship fees since 2014 to the college for socially backward category (SBC) students pursuing Printing and Packaging Technology (PPT) course. Till 2013, students from socially backward category were awarded scholarship fees for PPT course. However, after some changes from 2014 in the admission process, the scholarship fees was stopped for SBC students because the PPT course was not mapped by the social welfare department.

One of the engineering students, said, "The college has filled our exam forms. But hasn't sent it to the University of Mumbai. The college has asked us to pay some fees that SBC students have to pay. However, it is now increased as per fee regulatory authority. So students will have to pay part fees as per their caste ranging from Rs 22,000 up to Rs 70,000. If the rest of the money of scholarship doesn't come then we will have to pay it to the college on our own. For this, the college is taking an undertaking from us in which we will have to write that we will pay the remaining money later if the scholarship fees doesn't come. The undertaking is one of the condition to send our exam forms."

Another student said, "Our oral exams start from October 29 and our written test starts from November 19. We are not understanding whether to do a follow up with the social welfare department or study to clear our final years."

The principal of the college Vikram Patil said, "Our management wants students to pay 50% of the fees now and then their exam forms will be sent to Mumbai University. They should also give us undertaking that they will pay the remaining 50% later. The last day of sending exam forms to University is October 16 with late fees."
