Aarey Milk Colony witnessed a pre-environment day bash of sorts celebrated by Save Aarey Community — a group working towards the cause of saving Aarey Colony. The group not only planted 40 trees but also installed boards creating awareness about the biodiversity of this green lungs.

Manish Gadia founder of the Save Aarey Community said that this was the ideal time for tree plantation as by the time rain arrives the roots would be firm. "We planted around 40 trees, which were about 10 to12 feet tall near the VIP guest house and the idea to plant such big saplings was that they have a higher chance of survival," he said, adding that all these trees were local varieties and the phase two will be undertaken soon where 50 another trees would be planted.

Apart from that another initiative taken up was installing informative boards about Aarey Colony as the members stated that they wanted every single person travelling through Aarey Colony to realise why this is an extremely important place.

"Right at the entry of Aarey from Western Express Highway side we have placed a board that welcomes people to Aarey by stating that this biodiversity hotspot is home to 77 birds species, 16 mammals, 34 wildflowers, 46 reptiles, 13 amphibians and 86 butterflies. While we have now started with putting six boards, including messages like controlling speed and no littering, we also plan to install more information boards," informed another member, stating that they hope that these boards are not vandalised or stolen.

Aarey Colony CEO Gajanan Raut who was present for the plantation said that all the trees planted don't need too much water. "We are working in co-rodination with the community and nature lovers and also plan to put up more such information boards across Aarey specially the internal roads that will have specific information about trees of Aarey as well as new species being discovered from Aarey. We are also working on installing speed breakers at various location to ensure wildlife doesn't succumb to speeding vehicles," he said.
