Nearly two weeks after the magnetic resonance imaging machine at the BYL Nair Charitable Hospital suffered damages following a fatal mishap, the civic body has received a quotation of Rs 56 lakh for its repairs.
Hospital authorities said they will submit a proposal along with the quotation to the standing committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for its clearance.
"It is only after the sanction of funds, the repairs will begin. And by end of this month, the MRI machine is expected to be operational," said Dr Ramesh Bharmal, Dean of Nair hospital.
The request will be fast-tracked as the MRI section needs to be up and running at the earliest, he said.
The important scanning service came to an abrupt halt on January 27, after a 32-year-old man, who was visiting a relative, tried to enter the MRI room carrying an oxygen cylinder. The monster magnetic field of the machine sucked in Rajesh Maru with such a great force that the cylinder ruptured and he died after inhaling an excess amount of oxygen.
Dr Bharmal said engineers later deactivated the magnetic field and removed the cylinder from the machine.
However, the freak episode meant that patients at the civic-run hospital were deprived of the service, which cost nearly Rs 2,500 at Nair and between Rs 7,000 and to Rs 12,000 at private facilities.
"Till the machine starts, we are transferring those patients who need MRI to KEM and Sion hospitals," said Bharmal.
The police have booked four people, identified as Dr Siddhart Shah, Dr Saurabh Langekar, ward boy Vitthal Chavan and helper Sangita Surve of Nair hospital, on the charge of culpable homicide. All are out on bail
The inquiry report on the incident is expected next week, said the dean
