Girls definitely have been outperforming boys in central board exams. That's what the results declared so far have shown. And the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results that would soon come out, in all likelihood, will confirm this phenomenon.
And principals of colleges in the city swear by the fact that the number of girls acquiring seats in colleges outnumber boys.
According to principals of city colleges, in Arts stream, girls acquire 90% of the seats. And of late, even in professional courses like Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) more girls have been enrolling. In BMM, 60% of the students are girls, and 40% are boys. However, the number of girls is a bit low in Commerce stream (boys 60: girls 40).
Tukaram Shiware, chairman, Association of non-Government College Principals, said: "I have observed that the number of girls taking advantage of education facilities have been steadily increasing. If you look at the pass percentage of a couple of board exams in the recent past, you will see that girls are performing better than boys. That is the reason, I guess, more than boys, girls are getting enrolled not only in streams like Arts, but also in professional courses in city colleges."
Echoing the sentiment, Manju Nichani, principal, KC College, Churchgate, said: "Yes, compared to boys, more girls are getting admission in various streams in city colleges. And Arts stream sees the maximum number of girls. They are also seen in increasing numbers in professional course like BMM."
Dr TP Madhur Nair, dean, faculty of commerce, University of Mumbai & principal, Nirmala Memorial Foundation College of Commerce & Science, Kandivli, said: "I am not concerned with junior college, but in general, in degree courses you will find more girl students. There is more empowerment of ladies, and it's a welcome trend. In most streams in city colleges, girls outnumber boys."
