In order to construct the 33.5km-long Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro rail, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has received 31 bids.

Terming the response as "very encouraging", Ashwini Bhide, managing director of MMRC, said, "There are four bidders each for the first four packages and there are 5, 7 and 3 bids for the next three packages respectively."
In all, there are seven packages to construct the entire underground metro corridor. Each of the packages have around 4 to 5 km-long twin-tunnel construction work.

First package has Cuffe Parade, Vidhan Bhavan, Churchgate and Hutatma Chowk, the second has CST Metro, Kalabadevi, Girgaon and Grant Road and the third package consists of Central Metro, Mahalaxmi, Science Museum, Worli and Acharya Atre Chowk. Even Japanese International Cooperation Agency's (lender for the metro project) approval will be needed before the bids are awarded to private firms. The entire process of scrutiny of proposals and getting approvals will take a minimum of four months to award work.

Construction on this Rs23,136 crore project will commence during the first half of 2016. The Japanese agency will be funding Rs13,235 crore or 57.2 per cent of the project's estimated cost.
