A mentally unstable woman allegedly set herself and her nine-year-old daughter ablaze at their home in Vikramgadh, Thane, on Monday. Both died on the spot. The police said the incident took place in the morning in the bathroom when the woman’s in-laws were at home but they couldn’t do anything as the door was locked.

The police said the bodies were completely burnt.

The police said Laxmi Amle, 40 told her in-laws that she was going to give Sonali a bath when her in-laws were with Laxmi’s three-year-old son in another room.

Laxmi was mentally unstable and undergoing treatment. Her husband Shrikant is a government servant.

A police officer said, “Her husband, in his statement, has said that she had a mental problem but avoided taking medicines and got traumatic attacks.”

“Her in-laws heard the screams and saw smoke coming out from the bathroom. By the time they could get help, the bodies were charred,” said assistant inspector Ramram Mhamunkar.
