The city is likely to see a gradual increase in rainfall from this Thursday or Friday. Officials from IMD said that Mumbai has been witnessing passing showers for the past few days, and there is a possibility that the city could see good rains during the weekend. Other parts of north Konkan could also witness heavy showers.

Mahalaxmi-based Rajesh Kapadia, an enthusiast, who has been in the field of weather forecasting for over 45 years and also runs the Vagaries of Weather blog, said that Mumbai is likely to see gradual increase in rains from Thursday or Friday and though it was unlikely to see any 100mm rains in a day, it could be a couple of days of 50mm plus spells.

Meanwhile, Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, too, predicted rains. It said that a low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, which would travel towards the west. Therefore, one can expect rains to increase over parts of Vidarbha, and a few moderate spells with one or two heavy rains may occur over Marathwada. "Mumbai may receive scattered light rains, with one or two places getting a short spell of moderate showers as well," it stated.

Till August 14, the Santacruz observatory has recorded 2011.3mm of rainfall, while the Colaba observatory has recorded 1600.7mm of rains.
