The business head of a top insurance company was arrested on Thursday for abetting the suicide of his domestic work staffer, who allegedly jumped off his 18th floor residence on Monday.

According to Meghwadi police, 19-year-old Jyoti Patekar, a native of Ratnagiri, had worked in Nitin Khanna's home at Oberoi Splendor on Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road for a few months.

"It has come to light that after being accused of stealing a silver coin, Patekar committed suicide at around 8.30 pm on Monday," said a police officer.

"We have arrested Nitin Khanna and produced him before a local court on Thursday which remanded him to police custody for three days," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone X, Navinchandra Reddy.

The police had initially registered a case of accidental death and on Wednesday registered a case under section 306 (abetment of suicide) and 34 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code against Khanna and his wife Heena, who is has not been arrested yet.
