The city of light suddenly starts reeking of wasted money as soon as a festive season starts approaching. If you thought that the money in those charity boxes at a chemist's or a multiplex is doing good, this report may hurt your trust.

Except the ones in Thane district, no Ganpati mandals in the city contributed to the education aid. The State Charity Commissioner had this year appealed the Ganpati Mandals across the state to contribute to the education of poor students. They were given the option of either providing monetary help to children's education or provide them with educational stationary.

However, according to the data from the office of the Charity Commissioner, only Thane Ganpati Mandals from the Mumbai region have contributed Rs 52,000 to eleven students. Out of the eight regions in the state, the maximum monetary contribution of Rs 12,70,000 towards the education of 167 students was made by Pune's Ganesh Mandals followed by mandals in Kolhapur who contributed Rs 11,20,000 to 224 students.

Districts like Jalgaon and Latur provided educational stationary like books, uniforms etc instead of monetary help.

Refuting the data, Sudhir Salvi, General Secretary, Lalbaug Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal, Ganesh Galli, said, "We have paid the fees of some school students after the appeal made by the Charity Commissioner. But it has not yet been updated with their office."

Echoing Salvi's sentiments, another member and Trustee of GSB Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samiti from Wadala, RG Bhat, said, "Our Samiti has own set of guidelines and we have been contributing since long years. But our contribution is done in November and December month. Hence, it is not updated with Charity commissioner office yet. We will do minimum contribution of Rs 70 lakh this year."

Shivkumar Dige, Charity Commissioner, said, "Across the state we tried to help all poor students through Ganpati Mandals in the state. We told them that the contribution or offerings of money people make during the visit of the idol, that money can be spent for the education of the poor students across the state. Likewise, more then 2000 children got benefited and lakhs of funds were given in which some mandal's also contributed like books, uniforms etc."
