It seems Mumbai has quickly forgotten the cracked fields of Marathwada, the dried Puzhal lake of Chennai, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's clarion call to save water.

With the water stock touching only 50% in the reservoirs that supply water to Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Friday withdrew the 10% water cut it had imposed on the city in November 2018. Exactly a year ago, the stock stood at 75%.

Opposition parties and water experts said the announcement has been made just for political mileage considering that elections are around the corner. Mumbai needs better water management than just water cuts, said one of them.

The civic body declared the decision to relax the restriction at a meeting of its standing committee. The civic body said it hoped that there would be sufficient rainfall in the remaining months – August and September – of this season and lakes will be filled up.

Sources said the water cut had affected Colaba, Charkop, Jogeshwari and areas that are on an elevation. A day earlier, BJP minister Yogesh Sagar had demanded the withdrawal of water cut.

The Opposition too slammed the corporation for the hasty move. "It's politics rather than an attempt to alleviate the woes of citizens. How can a minister demand water cut be withdrawn and the BMC act immediately? What if there is insufficient rain," Asked Ravi Raja, leader of the opposition, BMC.

Madhukar Kambale, a water expert and former deputy municipal commissioner, said the BMC to make more efforts to save water. "Users at the end of the network suffer due to water cut. But what was the civic body done in the last year to save water," asked Kambale, stressing the need to have a plan for water conservation. "It has to take measures to curb leakages which can save more than 25% water."
