While a total of 219 Govindas — who form human pyramids on the day of the Dahi Handi festival — were injured in the city this year, the umbrella body of Dahi Handi pathaks has formed different groups to visit hospitals and check on the injured's health.

During a round-up of the hospitals, the Dahi Handi Utsav Samanvay Samiti (DHUSS) group found out that most of the injured Govindas did not belong to pathaks but were injured while playing individually with people from their locality.

"We have been forming small groups and visiting hospitals across the city where injured govindas have been admitted. Most of them have minor injuries and nobody is critical. While we were taking down their details, we found that some of the injured did not belong to particular pathaks but, were injured after they fell from a human pyramid they had formed with their society members, without any previous practice," said Bala Padalkar, president of the DHUSS.

16-year-old Rahul Chaudhary, a Diva resident, was admitted to the KEM hospital, after he fell from the third-tier. According to the hospital, he suffered a fracture on his right hand. Arvind Tiwari, a relative, said, "He was playing in the chawl with his friends. Without any practice, they had formed a human pyramid for fun. The teenagers wanted to have fun on the occasion of the festival, but he ended up getting admitted to the hospital."

Another injured Ganesh Jadhav, 31, a Kurla resident, who is admitted in the orthopaedic ward, said, "I suffered a wrist fracture. I was playing with three of my friends. I learnt a lesson. I should have practised rather than doing it for the first time."

This year around 963 Dahi Handi pathaks took health insurance for their members but the injured who are not part of the pathaks do not have any health insurance. Arun Patil, a member of DHUSS, said, "We will also be taking information about the minors injured during the festival and the Dharavi resident who died."

BJP MLA Vinod Tawde had visited the hospitals to check on the injured govindas.
