Mumbai: Cost of Dahisar Metro projects go up by Rs 1,400 crore

"The lower cost is the base cost of the project while the other is completion cost. Both the figures should not be mixed or get confused with," explained Sanjay Sethi, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA when asked about variations in just a period of two months.

In a span of just two months — from getting Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) approval in August to state cabinet approval on Tuesday — the project cost of Dahisar East-Andheri East and Dahisar East-Charkop-DN Nagar Metro rails has escalated by over Rs1,400 crore each. The state officials, however, deny any such hike.

When both the elevated Metro rail projects were approved by the authority chaired by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on August 26, the cost for 18.60-km long Dahisar East-Charkop-DN Nagar Metro line was Rs4,994 crore. But on Tuesday, it has been pegged at Rs6,410 crore — a hike of Rs1,416 crore.

Similarly, Dahisar East-Andheri East line that will be built on Western Express Highway at a length of 16.50-km was approved at a cost of Rs4,737 crore in August. Now the project cost, however, is Rs6,208 crore. This is Rs1,471 crore more than the previous budget, as per the report submitted by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in July this year.

"The lower cost is the base cost of the project while the other is completion cost. Both the figures should not be mixed or get confused with," explained Sanjay Sethi, additional metropolitan commissioner, MMRDA when asked about variations in just a period of two months.

According to Sethi, the base cost does not include interest on loans and taxes, thus the variation in the amount. Base cost only includes construction cost, land value among others.

Bhoomipujan for both the projects will be done on Sunday, October 11 at MMRDA grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The scheduled deadline to complete both the metro corridors has been kept as March 2019.
