It took the intervention of the prime minister's office for the police to crack the case of a newborn girl abandoned by her parents. After pursuing the case for nine months, the Nirmal Nagar police recently managed to trace the woman, who abandoned her infant in a dustbin in Golibar area of Santa Cruz.

The mother has confessed to abandoning the infant and has also divulged the name of the father of the child, police said. Blood samples of the baby and the mother were sent to KEM Hospital in Parel for DNA tests to establish their biological relationship. "We had recently arrested an unmarried woman in her early 20s for allegedly dumping her premature baby in a dustbin near Golibar area nine months ago. She has admitted that she is the mother of the baby," said senior police inspector Ashok Borse of the Nirmal Nagar police station.

The woman was produced before the metropolitan court and remanded in judicial custody. "During interrogations, the woman revealed the name of the person with whom she was in a relationship before she became pregnant," another officer said. She said the baby was delivered at her residence in Golibar area.

When the case was reported initially, the police took it casually and did not do much to trace the girl's parents. "They realised the seriousness of the issue only when they received a letter from the PMO, asking them to track the parents of the girl," a source told dna.

A team from Nirmal Nagar police station visited the spot and conducted a panchnama. The infant was taken to VN Desai Hospital. After giving medical treatment there, the baby was handed over to the Dongri children's remand home. The Missionaries of Charity - The Mother Teresa Organisation – then took the baby under their care. Two nuns brought the child to KEM Hospital for DNA tests on Wednesday.

The incident took place nine months ago when residents of Golibar area saw a newborn girl abandoned in a dustbin and informed the police. Two teams were formed which asked local informants to keep a watch in the area. The teams also checked on local hospitals and small clinics in the area to get information about the child's parents. After narrowing down to a handful of suspects, the police managed to arrest the woman, who later confessed the crime.
