This could have become fodder for Bollywood script writers, but the drama was cut short after a few hours.

In a recent incident, a 36-year-old lodged in Arthur Road jail allegedly assaulted a few on-duty policemen, tore the uniform of one of them inside the jail premises and made an attempt to flee. When the police overpowered him, he 'fell' unconscious. However, his lie was caught when doctors at Nair hospital said he was fine. He was sent back to the jail immediately.

The NM Joshi Marg police are investigating the matter.

According to senior inspector Shankarsingh Rajput, the incident happened on March 10, when Shakeel Haider Sheikh alias Guddu, a resident of Kongaon in Bhiwandi, was brought to jail from court by a police escort team.

"Around 6.45pm, Sheikh, who was arrested by the Malad police in a robbery case and was lodged in Arthur Road jail, created a commotion inside the jail. He bashed up two constables and tore the uniform of one of them. The entire incident happened inside the jail premises," said Rajput. He added that after the police staff overpowered Sheikh, he feigned unconsciousness.

"A police team took him to Nair hospital and the doctors, after examining him, told us that he was absolutely fine. We have registered a case against Sheikh for assaulting on-duty policemen and attempting to flee from jail and are investigating the matter further," said sub-inspector and investigating officer Rupali Patil.
